Natural Remedies for Depression

There are several non-herbal natural remedies for depression.  Keep in mind that if you do suffer from severe depression it is best to seek professional help, as deep lasting depression is not something that can be handled on your own.  If you have moderate or mild depression these natural approaches may work for you.

The first, and probably the easiest method to combat depression is exercise.  Getting out and moving will get your blood moving and can put you in a different more positive state of mind.  Exercise also releases endorphins which stimulate the brain and make you feel better.  The type of exercise doesn’t really matter just as long as your are out and moving around.  Choose something that you enjoy like a sport or just walking around.  Make sure you stay within your fitness level and seek a doctors permission if you have any movement related conditions.

Another easy way to tackle mild to moderate depression is through diet.  Its amazing how our mood is effected by the foods we put in our bodies.  Eating a double cheeseburger may taste great at the time but chances are it will put you in a sour mood an hour later.  Try eating healthy for two days and then evaluate your mood.  I won’t go into details on diet plans here, but eating healthy means whole grains, lean meats and lots of fruits and vegetables.  If you look at the label on the food packaging and you don’t know what some of the ingredients are then don’t eat it.

Getting enough sleep is enough for some people to completely change their outlook on life.  In our modern world sleep is one of the rarest natural resources left.  Most adults only get 5 to 6 hours of sleep every night.  Getting 8 hours of sleep is what most of us require and this in itself is one of the most powerful natural remedies for depression.

You might have noticed the general direction these tips are pointing in, doing things that are healthy for you in general can also have a profound effect on your mood and general sense of well being.  You can also try cutting out drinking caffeine or alcohol to adjust your health and mood too.  Once you start putting emphasis on being more healthy your mood will go along for the ride.
